Why Did God Create Different Colors?

Why did God create different colors? This question came to my mind while visiting my daughter in New York during the Thanksgiving Holiday week.  In this article, I will attempt to bring some insight as to why colors are important to our Creator.

My first thought is God is not boring! The Earth would be mundane if everything in it was black and white. If you are around my age, you probably remember the thrill you got when you were able to watch your first color television set. Here are a few clues shown in scripture that may validate my opinion that God enjoys color as much as we do:

God Created Colors Get Rid of Darkness

Genesis 1:1-11, describes God’s creation of the world and how He preferred colors over one bland shade. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”

“Then God said, “Let there be light and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. Apparently after He saw His wonderful masterpiece coming to life, God named each element. He called the light “Day” and the darkness, “Night”. He went on to place the firmament, which was most likely the color of golden sand amid the blue waters. God did not stop there. He then brought forth grass (green) and fruit trees. There is no denying that fruit comes in multiple colors, red, yellow, orange, and green.

God Wants You Enjoy His Creation

My second opinion is, I believe God created color for us to enjoy. Imagine how boring life would be if we lived in a world where color did not exist. There would be no art galleries.  Flowers at  weddings would be nonexistent. Children would not have parks to play in. You would not be able to distinguish the difference of your favorite sports team if they both wore the same color.

The Promised Land that God promised the children of Israel is evidence that He wants us to appreciate the richness and taste of colorful fruits and vegetables (Deuteronomy 8:8). When Moses instructed many men within their camp to spy out the land of Canaan, only 2 came back with a good report. Joshua and Caleb had enough courage to go in and possess the land that was filled with milk and honey (Numbers 13:23). Even though they saw the land was plentiful with all the food they needed for themselves and their families, the others were fearful and gave a bad report.

As we know the men who did not have enough faith to go fight for the land God had already promised them were left in the wilderness. Only Joshua, Caleb and the younger generation were able to enjoy the rich land God had promised them. This story should be a lasting reminder of how important it is to walk by faith to partake in God’s colorful creation. Sitting by and gazing at it does not please God. Furthermore, not recognizing the value of God’s multiple-colored world can cause our descendants to miss out on His goodness.
