Drinking in Gratitude: A Water Spell for Seeing and Remembering

Drinking in Gratitude: A Water Spell for Seeing and Remembering January 31, 2021

Every time I go to the ocean, I am reminded of the power of water.

Not just the waves and the foam, not just the loudness of crashing and hitting the shore. Not just the way it move the sand and hides the shore.

I am reminded of the vastness. The power of being reflective. The power of being able to hold life and death.

The power of being able to hold it all.

Me.

You.

All of this.

Into the Water, I Offer

Whether you are near water or not, you are water. You are a being of life and love and heartache and grief and wonder and joy. Your body is water. Your emotions are water. You take in and you give back.

It is no wonder that my favorite spells include water. Whether they are of taking in or releasing, water holds it all. Water can change and shift and still just long enough for me to see myself for who I really am.

Water nourishes me in the morning, washes me during the day, and cleanses my enamel. It brings moisture to food, it breaks down the crumbs on a plate. It breaks bonds and it rinses away.

In this time, I have been going back in time. Back to early waters of life and birth, to later waters of blood and sex. I have been traveling the space of seasons with their deluges and their droughts. I have been wandering back and looking deep.

What do you see in the waters of your life?

What do you learn in the waters of your life?

What have you gained and what have you lost?

What have you transformed?

Cast the circle. Sing to the elements.

Call on your godds if you have forgotten.

Ask the green of this world to remind you.

Do what it is that you do.

Do what it is that you must do.

Sink in. Drop in. Float down.

I invite you to dip into the water of time. Into the deepest depths that only you recognize when you sit at the edge and remember.

Fill up the depth of your heart with the wetness of memory. And drop it into a bowl, a cup, a chalice, a shell, or a cauldron. Fill the space with your time. With your longing, with your wisdom, with your past and your present. Even your future.

Give Thanks to the Well of Time

And into that space, look deeply. Place a finger past the surface, past the tension, into the sea of your life.

Remember. Remember all of the things that you are. All of the things you have become. All of the beauty and delight. All of the pain and grief.

Give thanks for it all. Give gratitude for it all. Give your deepest acknowledgement and prayer for what you have stirred and sipped.

I thank you for the vastness of my experience.

I thank you for the way you balance and move with the moon.

I thank you for holding it all. Holding me. Holding this heart.

Give your thanks. Give it with a song, with a sound, with a deep sigh, with a long laugh. With a promise to always see what is reflected back.

See yourself.

Know yourself.

Be grateful for yourself.

You have done hard things. You will do them again.

Perhaps you drink the water. Perhaps you pour it onto your favorite tree. Perhaps you add it to a hot bath or dip your face and anoint your heart.

Let the water hold you.

Let the water hold you.

About Irisanya Moon
I’m a Witch. I’m a writer. I’m a priestess, teacher, drummer, feminist, and initiate in the Reclaiming tradition. I serve the gods, my community, and the Earth. I’ve called myself a Witch for nearly 20 years, and my life has been infused with magick. I am interested in shifting stories – the ones we tell ourselves and the ones that are told about us. I’m continuously inspired to engage as the storyteller and the story, the words and the spaces between. I am a devotee of Aphrodite, Hecate, the Norns, and Iris. I seek to find love and to inspire love by reminding us we are not alone, while also meeting myself at the crossroads, holding the threads of life, and bringing down messages from the gods. (I've also published some books. You can get them at my website.) You can read more about the author here.
